Tocotrienols - The Vitamin E That Packs a Powerful Punch of Antioxidants

Tocotrienols - The Vitamin E That Packs a Powerful Punch of Antioxidants

From slowing down ageing to potentially promoting anti-cancer, this super anti-oxidant is one vitamin that should be included in everybody's diet.

Tocotrienols are part of the Vitamin E family. The full spectrum of Vitamin E is made up of Tocopherols and Tocotrienols. Often, the average diet contains only the most common component of Vitamin E, which is the Tocopherols, leaving out the more valuable Tocotrienols. Scientists have discovered that Tocotrienols provide therapeutic and preventive properties essential for combating diseases that come with ageing that Tocopherols alone cannot provide.

As a super anti-oxidant, Tocotrienols help to effectively neutralize those nasty free radicals that cause havoc in our body. Free radicals are toxic byproducts of oxidation, the chemical process that causes iron to rust or peeled bananas and apples to turn brown. Essentially, free radicals destroy the DNA of our cells and make them vulnerable to decay. Free radicals are therefore linked to a host of health issues such as skin ageing, cancers, cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and neuro-degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease.

Apart from its potent cancer preventive benefits, Tocotrienols have also been found to promote new artery formation after a stroke, improve insulin sensitivity and prevent bone loss.

Perhaps, one of the most promising recent findings about Tocotrienols is its crucial role in protecting the brain by targeting specific free radicals that damage brain cells. Brain health conditions such as Alzheimer's, Dementia and Parkinson's disease are linked to damage by free radicals. Research now suggests that Tocotrienols may help fight the debilitating Parkinson's disease or slow the course of the disease.

Amazing Benefits of Tocotrienols

Tocotrienols is a powerful Vitamin E that can:

  • Protect the brain
  • Reduce risk of cancers
  • Improve heart health
  • Prevent osteoporosis
  • Improve gastrointestinal health
  • Improve skin and hair health
  • Delay cellular ageing & hyperpigmentation

Prevents death of brain cell after a stroke injury

Research has shown that Tocotrienols, the most potent form of natural Vitamin E protect against neural cell death and rescue the brain by preventing the death of nerve cells after a stroke injury. (Chandan Sen, Ohio State University, 2017). Following the trauma of a stroke, an excessive amount of glutamate is released in the brain. In tiny amounts, glutamate has important roles in learning and memory. However in larger amounts it triggers a sequence of reactions that cause the death of brain cells or neurons. Excess glutamate causes an enzyme to release a fatty acid that poisons the brain cells and causes their death. The presence of Tocotrienols in cells exposed to excess glutamate decreases the release of this damaging fatty acids by 60 percent, compared to cells exposed to excess glutamate in the absence of Tocotrienols.

Protects brain cells from free radical injury

Research has shown that Tocotrienols quickly and easily reach the brain where they improve brain function and health. Some brain health conditions such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are linked to free radical damage. Because of its high concentration of antioxidants, Tocotrienols is able to fight specific inflammatory factors related to these conditions. Recent research studies suggests that Tocotrienols may help fight or slow down the course of Parkinson’s disease.

Reduces Risk of Cancers

Scientific studies suggests that Tocotrienols carry anti-cancer properties. A 2013 lab research found that Tocotrienols may be responsible for the death of breast cancer cells. It also found that the gamma and delta Tocotrienols particularly play a role in fighting liver, colon, prostate, lung, stomach, skin and pancreatic cancers. As a super antioxidant, Tocotrienols reduce cancer by combatting the free radicals that attack our bodies.

Improves Heart Health

Oxidative stress and inflammation are linked to the manifestation of cardiovascular diseases as a person ages. Tocotrienols which possess superior antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties can reduce and reverse inflammation as well as reduce damage by free radicals that harm our heart health.

Generally, Tocotrienols support heart health by maintaining arterial health, healthy levels of cholesterol, improves metabolic health which is related to weight management, triglyceride levels, blood pressure levels and blood sugar metabolism.

Promotes Bone Health and Retards Onset of Osteoporosis

The beneficial effects of Tocotrienol on bone can be attributed to its role as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory agent, suppressor of the mevalonate pathway, and modulator of genes favorable to bone formation. In a lab test on rats, Tocotrienol supplementation resulted in an improvement in bone mineral density.

Improves Gastrointestinal Health

Tocotrienols has been found to reduce acidity brought on by stress in the gastrointestinal system and therefore prevents painful lesions. A study conducted by researchers at Universiti Teknologi Mara on the gastro -protective effects of delta tocotrienols has found that tocotrienols may protect against gastric injury caused by the widespread use of common painkillers such as NSAIDS (Dr Barrie Tan, President of American River Nutrition).

Improves Skin and Hair

Tocotrienols are popularly included in skincare and hair products because of their powerful antioxidative properties. Antioxidants protects against damage from free radicals. They coat hair with a protective seal, preventing moisture loss and hair breakage. Skincare with Tocotrienols retards cellular ageing and reverse the ageing and damaging effects of free radicals on the skin, helping to prevent wrinkles and fine lines.

Reduces Hyperpigmentation and Dark Spots on Skin

Continuous exposure to sun undoubtedly causes damage on the skin. These skin damages appear as dark spots, also known as sun spots, and can eventually break the integrity of skin cells. Further damage appear as wrinkles and fine lines. Tocotrienols can prevent these hyperpigmentation from developing further. First, they slow down the process of a melanin producing enzyme called tyrosinase. While this happens, the Tocotrienols work on breaking down the melanin structures causing the appearance of the hyperpigmentation.
